Inside the Most Mind-Bending Show, HBO's Westworld

There are projects you work on, and then there are projects that genuinely change the way you think about storytelling. Westworld is the latter — and getting to serve as acting coach on an episode of this extraordinary series was, without question, one of the most intellectually alive experiences of my professional life.

Huge thanks to director Andy Seklir and AD Greg Guzik. Created and executive produced by the singular Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, with additional EPs Athena Wickham and Richard J. Lewis — this team operates at a level of ambition and craft that is humbling to witness up close. HBO gave them the runway to build something truly unlike anything else on television, and they delivered a world that is still being talked about.

The cast — Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, Ed Harris, Thandie Newton, and so many more — brought such specificity and depth to characters who are grappling with questions of consciousness, identity, and what it means to be human. Working in service of that kind of storytelling, even for one episode, is the kind of creative nourishment that stays with you. I am so grateful I got to be part of that world.
