Five Years, One Workshop, and a Room Full of the Next Generation of Sitcom Stars

Five years. Five summers. Five rooms full of hungry, talented actors who came ready to work — and left with a new understanding of what it actually takes to land, hold, and own a role in a multi-camera sitcom. I am so proud and so genuinely moved to be returning this July to A Class Act NY (ACANY) in New York City for my fifth consecutive year teaching my sitcom workshop, and I cannot wait to get back in that room.

A Class Act NY has been one of New York’s premier acting studios since 2005 — an award-winning school where Broadway, TV, and film professionals teach alongside directors, talent agents, and casting directors from NYC and LA. It is exactly the kind of environment where serious actors come to sharpen the skills that actually get them hired. Teaching my sitcom workshop there has been one of the most fulfilling creative relationships of my career, and year after year, the students who walk through that door remind me why this work matters so deeply.

What I bring into that room every July is everything I have learned across decades on professional sets — directing episodes of Bunk’d and Just Add Magic, coaching dialogue and performance on Happy’s Place, Night Court, No Good Nick, Resident Alien, Ghostwriter, Bizaardvark, and so many more. The rhythms, the timing, the live-audience energy, the multi-camera awareness, the specific demands of the sitcom form — all of it, distilled into a hands-on, scene-based, get-on-your-feet workshop designed to give actors the real-world tools they need. Not theory. Not abstraction. The actual craft.

Five years in, the thing that still gets me every single time is watching an actor find their comedic timing in real time — that moment when the room laughs and they realize, wait, I did that.
